A bilateral discussion between the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs and the National Immigration Administration of the People’s Republic of China was held on March 14, 2026, at the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs. The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Hon. Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, while the Chinese delegation was led by Hon. Zhang Yong, Vice Minister of the National Immigration Administration of the People’s Republic of China.
Representing this Ministry, Hon. Sunil Watagala, Attorney-at-Law Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs; Mr. Ravi Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Secretary and parliamentary Affairs ; Mr. C.D. Kaluarachchi, Additional Secretary (Development and Planing); Mrs. M.S.P. Suriyapperuma, Additional Secretary (Administration and Police) ; Mr. Chaminda Pathiraja, Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, along with senior officials of the Department of Immigration and Emigration; Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya,Attorney-at-Law Inspector General of Police; and Mr. Asanga Karavita, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, actively participated in this discussion.
During the meeting, important matters related to immigration and emigration administration, border control, and public security of both countries were discussed. The Chinese government pledged its support for modernizing Sri Lanka’s border control operations, and attention was focused on making immigration and emigration activities more efficient through the use of information technology and the Government of Republic of China will financially support for the purpose. Necessity of acting with mutual understanding between the two countries to curb transnational organized crimes, human trafficking, and cybercrimes was emphasized. Recalling the long-standing friendship and historical ties between the two nations, the Chinese delegation assured that China’s support will always be extended to Sri Lanka.
